A brief video of USC Geology students making GAK! with the children in the St. Lawrence Place after school program.  Graduate-Level Science student volunteers have been coming to SLP for over 5 years to share Science Quest– an inquiry-based science program aimed at getting all students interested and involved in Science- with our students.

Educating Homeless Children

“The high mobility associated with homelessness has severe educational consequences [for children].  Homeless families move frequently due to limits on length of shelter stays, search for safe and affordable housing or employment, or to escape abusive partners.  All too often, homeless children have to change schools because shelters or other temporary accommodations are not located in their school districts.  In recent years, 42% of homeless children transferred schools at least once, and 51% of these students transferred twice or more,” (National Coalition for the Homeless, June 2008).

Thanksgiving Blessings at St. Lawrence Place

Have you noticed how everyone seems to skip Thanksgiving anymore?  Christmas decorations went up in stores before Halloween, and I passed a house in my neighborhood last night that actually had a tree up already. But let’s face it – some of us need Thanksgiving.  We need to be reminded to stop, look around, and be thankful for what (and who) we have in our lives.

Kids Create: Music

A group from USC called Communities in Harmony has been coming to St. Lawrence Place weekly this semester to teach the kids in our after school program the basics of some classical instruments, including the violin and piano, as shown in the video.
