History of Violence and Trauma for Homeless Mothers

Posted by: Becca Smith Hill

The SHIFT (Service and Housing Interventions for Families in Transition) Study examined longitudinal outcomes among families experiencing homelessness and entering an emergency shelter, transitional housing, or permanent supportive housing program.

Their findings include a prevalence of major traumatic experiences for these mothers, which translates to physical and emotional problems among their children as well.

Findings indicate that an effective response to family homelessness by housing and homeless programs should include the following package of essential supports, which St. Lawrence Place aims to embody for families:

  • Housing in a setting appropriate for each family
  • Comprehensive needs assessments to target services
  • Trauma-informed approach for all services
  • Case management to address income, education and employment
  • Parenting skill training and supports
  • Services to address maternal depression and post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Child-focused programs and service planning to support health, well-being and academic success

Jessica’s Journey

Posted by: Tyra Jefferson

Jessica Dillard came to SLP in November 2009 with her daughter after she had been moving from house to house.   She was anxious, nervous, and frustrated that life choices and decisions that she made led her to SLP.  According to Jessica, “I had burned every bridge that there was with family and friends. I was homeless with a three year old and had nowhere to go.  I was trying to rebuild the little life that I had left but the struggles had become so big that I considered suicide as my final option.  In my quest trying to salvage my life and provide for my child, I came across St. Lawrence Place”.

Reunification at St. Lawrence Place

From time to time, we all may lose jobs, experience financial hardship or even financial devastation that causes those of us who are parents to make the difficult decision of temporarily placing our children in the care of the State.  In other unfortunate times, children are taken away from parents due to neglect caused by poor parenting skills, drug abuse, exposure to domestic violence or other situations that may harm the child.
