Monday, August 19 held “A Perfect Surprise” for our St. Lawrence Place Book Club! We had just finished reading Perfect Peace, a novel written by Dr. Daniel Black. (All novels for the club were generously donated by Dr. Black). Since early July, our Book Club had been reading the novel and we all had many questions regarding the content, which explores gender roles and the debate of nature vs. nurture.
As a surprise, Tamara King, our volunteer Book Club leader arranged for Dr. Black to drive in from Atlanta, Georgia and participate in a live discussion with our residents. Not only did Dr. Black surprise our residents, he and a friend also provided food for all residents and their families that night.
Many of our residents expressed that meeting Dr. Black has ignited their desire for reading also served as a source of hope for their everyday lives. Many expressed their appreciation to Tamara King as well, for her hard work and dedication to promoting literacy among adults. We are honored to have such wonderful individuals express a genuine interest in helping our families!
Next up, we are reading The Same Kind of Different as Me, by Ron Hall.
