A Success Story and A Cake

Posted by: Ashley Harp

Dominica has been a resident at St. Lawrence Place since February 2012.  She is approaching the one year mark and has been making great progress towards her goals.  One of Dominica’s major goals was to earn a certificate from Midlands Technical College’s cake decorating program.

In March 2012, Dominica applied for a Quick Jobs Scholarship, offered to residents of SLP by the Midlands Technical College Foundation and Bank of America Foundation, and was selected as a scholarship recipient in May.  The scholarship covered her tuition, books, and supplies.  As a prerequisite, she attended weekly 21st Century classes at Midlands Tech from June through July.  The classes covered topics that included Personal Accountability and Professionalism, Verbal Communication Skills, and Principles of Teamwork, Collaboration, and Trust.  Her cake decorating classes started in mid-September and ended mid-October.  Dominica earned her cake decorating certificate on October 16, 2012.

Since earning her certificate, Dominica has continued her job as a PCA at Palmetto Health Richland and is diligently searching daily for a full-time or part-time position as a cake decorator so that she can pursue her passion.  We are so proud of her accomplishment and excited about what is to come!

Below is the cake that she baked from scratch and decorated with the new St. Lawrence Place logo.
