Football season is back, it’s getting darker earlier and our morning temperatures are lowering, I guess it’s safe to say fall is in the air!  Which means we are gearing up for new programming with our Adults and Teens at SLP!

College Prep for SLP Teens

On Saturday, February 22, 2014, St. Lawrence Place teens had an opportunity to attend an “Undergraduate Preparation Workshop” hosted by the Upsilon Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.  The workshop was held on the campus of Midlands Technical College in Irmo, SC.

PHLYTE Program for SLP Teens

Beginning the first week of January, the teens living at St. Lawrence Place had an opportunity to participate in the PHLYTE Program (Pressley House Leading Youth Towards Excellence), an Evidence-Based Intervention that will reduce the risk of HIV, STDs and Teen Pregnancy. The initiative was led by Ms. Dwiyana Owens Hill, Founder and CEO of The Pressley House, a boarding home for teen mothers here in Columbia.

A SLP Book Club Surprise!

Monday, August 19 held “A Perfect Surprise” for our St. Lawrence Place Book Club!  We had just finished reading Perfect Peace, a novel written by Dr. Daniel Black.  (All novels for the club were generously donated by Dr. Black).  Since early July, our Book Club had been reading the novel and we all had many questions regarding the content, which explores gender roles and the debate of nature vs. nurture.

Family Literacy Night Activity: Ears Up, Ears Down

Every third Monday, SLP hosts a Family Literacy Night for all residents.  Each family sits together and engages in activities that will enhance their child’s reading and comprehension skills. It is also an uninterrupted time that families can discuss their day and any other pertinent issues, as well as share a meal.
