Every third Monday of each month, St. Lawrence Place hosts a Family Literacy Night in which all families come together for a meal that is prepared on site and a literacy based activity. May’s Family Literacy Night was a successful, fun night filled with laughter, applause, and a few tears as the teenagers of St. Lawrence Place presented their career projects in front of an audience of parents, children and staff. The teens worked for weeks preparing their projects by gathering information on their dream careers to include education requirements, job descriptions, projected salaries and their college of choice. Among our group of teens, we have aspiring lawyers, NBA players, veterinarians, military officers, cosmetologists, psychologists, athletic trainers, NFL players, pediatricians and artists. We were very proud as each teen came up and presented quality PowerPoint presentations and poster boards and spoke clearly and very articulately.
One student, Demars, surprised the Children’s Program staff with a very touching ‘thank you’ letter for all the encouragement, support and motivation that they give him on a daily basis. We look forward to seeing the teens’ success as they pursue their dream careers!
