Holiday (Shop) Memories

Posted by: Ashley Harp

The holiday season is in full swing at St. Lawrence Place!  Each year, we have a Christmas dinner that is held at either Eastminster Presbyterian Church or First Calvary Baptist Church.  This year, we decided to do things a little differently than previous years.

On December 10th, SLP held its first ever Holiday Shop at Eastminster Presbyterian Church.  In the past, each family made a wish-list and gifts were purchased, wrapped and dropped off to SLP to be given out to the residents by our staff.  This year, we wanted to empower our parents and get them more involved by offering them a chance to select presents for their children from a collection of gifts donated by Eastminster Presbyterian Church, First Calvary Baptist Church and other SLP supporters.

Gifts were set up according to the children’s age group.  Parents selected one educational gift and one fun gift for each child.  They also selected a gift for themselves along with two stocking-stuffers and a basket of household cleaning supplies and paper products.  Volunteers were on hand to assist residents with shopping, gift wrapping and loading gifts in cars.

Our annual Christmas dinner was held immediately after the holiday shop. During dinner, there were fun activities for the families to participate in including arts and crafts, pictures with Santa, and Christmas carols.   Our first holiday shop was a success and we look forward to carrying on this tradition at First Calvary Baptist Church next year.  We would like to thank all of our St. Lawrence Place supporters who cheerfully give not only during the holiday season but all year long.  A special thank you goes out Lizard’s Thicket for catering our dinner this year and to Meredith Christenberry of East Minster Presbyterian Church and Arbra Lewis of First Calvary Baptist Church for helping us to plan and coordinate our events.

WIS TV’s Mary King interviewed CEO Lila Anna Sauls and a current SLP resident about the new Holiday Shop; view the video here.

Happy Holidays from the SLP family!
