Some Things Just Make You Smile…

Posted by: Lila Anna Sauls

My weekend was great. Nothing in particular happened…but as my house wound down Sunday night and all seven of us prepped for the week ahead there was a sense of peace and simple happiness.  I thought of the things that had made me smile over the two days: a new shirt, surprise sno-cones with my boys, a trip to Main Street with just one of the twins, and hanging a painting I’d just bought.

That’s how the past months have been at St. Lawrence Place. Sure, we have some major accomplishments: a successful Race for the Place and record-setting Angels Tea, a trip to NYC to present on our best-practice literacy program at a national conference, and well attended and incredibly educational Heart to Heart parenting classes each week. But there are a lot of little things that are making us smile right now. Here are a few:

The kids are getting out of school soon! Staff is busy prepping for our full-day summer camp and literacy program.  We’re scheduling volunteers to fix healthy lunches for the children, and painting walls to brighten the room.

Our teens will present on their career choices this week.  Each teen has chosen a profession, and in addition to being able to speak to a group about why, they’ve also been challenged to bring a mentor from that line of work as part of the presentation.  We have so many people coming for the event we’ve had to move it off campus!

People are coming by for tours.  I absolutely love it when people drop in for a visit. So many of them have no idea how much we’ve grown over the years, and continue to be pleasantly surprised by our broad scope of services – many of which are becoming best practices. Please…come see us!

Campus is beautiful!  Thanks to volunteers, staff, caring small business owners, and our families our campus is beautiful!  The planters are full of blooming flowers, the courtyard grass is green (except where the children play football!), and our vegetable and herb garden is thriving.  We love to call ourselves the “gated community” on Waites Road!

And finally, we’re becoming the voice of homeless families in the Midlands.  We are honored that other organizations are adopting our programs and best practices. St. Lawrence Place has always believed in empowering our families and their children, and it’s shown through our successful life skill classes, parenting classes, book club and literacy program for our families.  We’re thrilled as other agencies offer these programs and more and more homeless families with children are helped as a result!

Things are good at St. Lawrence Place.  Come see us…I bet you’ll leave smiling!
