Summer Volunteers Rock!

It is estimated that the “Summer Slide” accounts for as much as 85% of the reading achievement gap between lower income students and their middle- and upper income peers according to Richard Allington and Anne McGill-Frazen, authors of the article Why Summer Matters in the Rich/Poor Achievement Gap, August 2009.

This staggering statistic is the driving force behind St. Lawrence Place’s Summer Literacy Camp. Thanks to Central Carolina Community Foundation, for the last two summers we have recruited volunteers to work one-on-one with the children participating in summer camp at SLP. Without the help of dedicated volunteers, this program would not be the HUGE success that it is today.

This summer 54 volunteers dedicated over 350 hours of their time to increasing literacy with our children. We are proud to announce – 89% of the children participating in SLP’s Summer Literacy Camp increased or maintained appropriate literacy levels over the summer!

Thank you to the following dedicated literacy volunteers – Brockman School volunteers, First Presbyterian Church volunteers, Karen Roach, Elaine Kalagher, Intel volunteers, Peggy Bethel, Emily Wright, Jacqueline Radical, Margaret Sims, Emily Middleton, Justyn Mann, Toure’ Nance, Tracey Wilkins, Elaine Miller, Abhijeet Chevnevjie, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church volunteers, Selina G. Diaz, Rebecca Frierson, Matt Frierson, Susan Parlier, Tyreashia Thomas, Tana Holloman, Arah Cline, Carol Knight, Jessica Butler, Mary Sulton, Carolyn Adams, Grayson Cline, Benjamin Buchanan, Evers Thordahl, Evie Needle, Bette Needle, Rose Needle and Amber Banco.

In addition to Literacy Volunteers, we also want to send an equally important thank our Summer Lunch Volunteers who helped us provide a total of 5,640 healthy meals/snacks to over 35 children in our summer camp over the course of 10 weeks:
